Morris

Morris's grandmother's dog isn't named Houdini by chance. The animal is a master of escape. Morris has to climb the mountain near Grandma's house to look for the dog. But just as he begins the trek home with the dog in his arms, the snow comes pouring down. Suddenly, the boy is ankle-deep in it. At the top of the mountain, the north wind bites. The valley seems very far away. To make matters worse, Houdini does what she loves most: run away. Morris is at a loss. But then, amidst all that white, a fellow sufferer suddenly appears—a foul-mouthed boy, with a giant ram beside him.

With writer(s) Elvis Peeters published by Lannoo, 2023.

The toad peers around.

Nothing to see.

"Something's going to happen here," says the snail.

"I'm curious," mutters the toad.

Does the snail mean the ants passing by?

Or the berry falling? Or the two sparrows?

The toad doesn't know.

"Just look," says the snail.

De meest eenzame walvis ter wereld

With writer Kim Crabeels (Re-) published by Pelckmans, 2024.

Lilja lives in a lighthouse at the top of the world. She is the keeper of the Northern Lights. Her dad is often away. He measures and weighs the water, counts the fish, animals, and plants, and searches for wonders at sea. After each voyage, Lilja receives a shell. Her collection grows ever larger. One day, her dad tells her about a whale who always swims alone. Other whales can't hear his song, so they don't consider him one of their own.

When Lilja stays home alone again, it's quiet in the lighthouse. Until suddenly, a song sounds from one of the shells. Is it the whale? And is he singing for Lilja?

Helden

Over three thousand years ago, they lived in Greece: the heroes this book is about.

Adventure still existed! There were cyclopes, centaurs, troops of warriors, and mysterious labyrinths. Going on a journey was an undertaking.

And the question was whether you would even return from it.

Yet, some young men set out. And not unnoticed. The deeds of men with names like Perseus, Heracles, and Jason were sung by poets, thinkers, and writers. These ancient stories describe fabulous events, of people who experienced unimaginable things.

But perhaps the greatest wonder is that, after all this time, we can still read about their adventures—retold in a contemporary and witty way.

With writer Daan Remmerts de Vries & published by Lannoo, 2020.
